    September 4, 2008 | events

A friend told me about this, sounds like a really cool event. See a description below or go to drawingcenter.org for more details.

    The Big Draw 2008
    Saturday, September 6, 2008

Join us for our third annual celebration of drawing, inspired by the wildly popular program of the same name in the UK. The Big Draw offers hands-on art projects for all ages that are guaranteed to change the way you think about drawing. Pick up a free sketchbook and participate in artist-led activities at five fantastic Lower Manhattan venues. Bring your imagination and let your creativity flow—no experience necessary!

The Big Draw is part of the Arts on the Horizon series presented by The River To River Festival and made possible by a grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is funded through Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Additional funding is provided by Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer through the NYC & Company Foundation and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Battery Park City Parks Conservancy’s Teardrop Park

    1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Artist-Led Drawing

Create fantastical hybrid animals inspired by ancient cave drawings and the past and present wildlife found in Teardrop Park’s natural surroundings. Draw with Larry Dobens using pigments and tools resembling those of our cave artist ancestors.

Location: Teardrop Park, between Warren and Murray streets, East of River Terrace, in Battery Park City

    Wonderbra D2G Billboard
August 15, 2008 | cool stuff, pgd general

Check out this ad for Wonderbra! “D to G. Because we’re more than a handful” It’s made up of tons of tiny photographs of women wearing Wonderbras. I love it! My friend just sent me a link to the BuzzFeed “The Biggest Collection of Boobs Ever” posting. And, by the way, I also like BuzzFeed, so check them out too!

This Wonderbra billboard is comprised of thousands of smaller pictures of regular women in their bras. Wonderbra asked the ladies of London to help generate “the biggest collection of boobs ever seen.” The company then used the collection to create this image. The billboard is on display in central London or you can visit the interactive version online. Yes, you can zoom in.

    Happy Bike Ride
    July 23, 2008 | pgd general

I was feeling a little whimsical the other day and I made this drawing for a CD cover I made for Jessica. It started just as a “rough sketch” of a drawing I would make, but I really liked the simplicity of it so I kept it as is.

    Marketing Mentor
    July 2, 2008 | pgd recommended, resources

I’ve just recently finished reading The Designer’s Guide to Marketing and Pricing by Ilise Benum and Peleg Top. It’s an excellent resource for designers, whether starting out or looking to better market themselves. I love the way it’s written, it’s very informal without losing credibility. Below is the description that appears on their site for a little extra insight:

Whether you’re a freelancer, a seasoned owner of a design firm, or an aspiring entrepreneur, if you want to succeed in your creative business, The Designer’s Guide to Marketing and Pricing will show you the way. Based on 35 years of combined business experience, this creative business bible will show you how to:

    • Determine who your ideal clients are and how to get their attention
    • Choose which marketing tools are most effective and how to use them
    • Create a smart marketing plan that reflects your financial goals
    • Take small actionable steps toward those financial goals
    • Turn that initial contact into a profitable relationship for everyone involved
    • Talk to clients about money and get them to tell you their budget
    • Figure out your hourly rate and give accurate estimates for your jobs You’ll learn the ins and outs of creating and running a create services business – the things they never taught you in school. Plus, the book is chock full of useful worksheets and checklists so you can take what you learn and apply it immediately and directly to your business.

I’ve also checked out their Marketing Mentor website, which is extremely informative. They have free weekly podcasts, which I’ve just started listening to, where they speak a little more in-depth about different chapters of the book. It’s very insightful to take the book a step further and listen to the background behind the pages as well as personal experiences. I highly recommend you buy this book, I’ve provided a link to it in Amazon.com below and I also recommend you take a minute to check out their podcasts.

    Men’s Room Mural
June 22, 2008 | cool stuff, pgd general

There ARE elements of design and creativity so bear with me, LOL. My friend forwarded me this and I thought it was interesting to say the least.

Edge Designs is an all-women run company that designs interior office space. They had a recent opportunity to do an office project in NYC. The client allowed the women of this company a free hand in all design aspects. The client was a company that was also run by all women execs… The result… well… We all know that men never talk, never look at each other… And never laugh much in the restroom… The men’s room is a serious and quiet place. But now, with the addition of one mural on the wall, lets just say the men’s restroom is a place of laughter and smiles. And they say women don’t have a sense of humor. Share this to all the gals in your life that need a smile and the guys you think can take having a little fun poked at them, after all they are always trying to poke a little something at us.
